Flying ants are pretty common in Johor Bahru, especially near suburbs. Homeowners often panic when they see swarms of flying insects inside their homes, fearing an infestation. Little do they know that flying ants can either be the standard "ants" or "white ants", a.k.a. termites. Understanding the difference and their behavior will help you manage them effectively.
Are They Flying Ants or White Ants (Termites)?
Flying ants, or alates, are reproductive ants or termites that emerge from mature colonies to start new nests. There are some differences between both:
Ants have bent antennae, a pinched waist, and two pairs of wings of different sizes.
Termites have straight antennae, a thick waist, and wings of equal size.

Why Are There Flying Ants or Termites in Your Home?
Both ant and termite alates are drawn to light and often enter homes through open windows and doors. This happens especially at higher floors when the balcony lights are turned on at night. However, frequent sightings could indicate a colony nearby—either in your garden, walls, or flooring.
If you notice discarded wings near windowsills, this could be a sign of termites establishing a colony inside your home.
Ants typically come from outdoor colonies but can occasionally nest indoors.
How to Prevent Flying Ants
Seal Entry Points: Close windows and doors during swarming seasons, and use fine mesh screens to prevent entry.
Minimize Outdoor Lights: Reduce exterior lighting at night to avoid attracting swarmers.
Reduce Moisture: Termites thrive in damp conditions, so fix leaks and improve ventilation.
Remove Food Sources: Keep sugary foods sealed for ants, and avoid wood-to-soil contact to prevent termites.
Inspect for Nests: Check garden soil, tree stumps, or cracks in your home’s foundation for signs of an established ant or termite colony.

How to Deal with Flying Ants or Termites Inside Your Home
While this rarely happens, but If you suddenly find a swarm indoors, follow these steps:
Turn Off Lights & Open Doors – Since they are attracted to light, turning off indoor lights and opening a door or window may encourage them to leave.
Vacuum Them Up – A quick and effective way to remove swarmers without using chemicals.
Use Soapy Water Spray – This kills flying ants on contact and prevents others from gathering. (This method is not effective for termites.)
Track Down the Source – If swarms are frequent, inspect your property for an ant or termite colony.
